Foreign Policy
The Korean War started on June 25, 1950 and lasted until July 27, 1953, a total of three years, one month and two days. During this time, the United states had two presidents, Harry S. Truman, who was in office at the beginning of the war, and Dwight D. Eisenhower who was elected to finished it. Kim il sung was placed as Premier by the Soviets because of his experience in guerrilla warfare against the imperial Japanese. Kim il Sung, leader of North Korea, led an invasion force to try and capture South Korea but failed against the UN’s forces in 1950 and this led to the Chinese People's army entering the war which decreased Kim il sung’s power. Mao Zedong was the leader of China and allied with Kim Il sung and Joseph stalin during the Korean War. Zedong lent North Korea three divisions of Chinese troops. when the united nations troops invaded North Korea Zedong declared intervention and tried to unify Korea as well. The main goal for the United States in the Korean War was to keep communism from spreading in the weakened post-war eastern world. When the Soviet Union invaded Northern Korea the U.S. it called upon the United States’ foreign policy to “contain” communistic ideas present in Korea and attempt to expel them from the country, this type of foreign policy is most commonly known as "collective security". At the beginning of World War 2, the United States did not wish to enter into another war since it was still recovering from the Great Depression and did not have the resources to fight a full scale war. But after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, the U.S. government had no choice but to go to war. They joined joined forces with the Allies (Britain, and France) to fight the Axis Powers (Germany, Italy, and Japan). After the Allies won, President Harry Truman wrote the Truman Doctrine that explained how the United States would go out and stop Communism from spreading. This is one of the main reasons that lead to the US getting involved.
