Korean War Songs
Parker-Fuzzy-Wuzzy Teddy Bear
Performed by Lone Pine Recorded c. 1952 Written by Paul Roberts Just a fuzzy-wuzzy teddy bear I found upstairs today And it brought sweet happy mem'ries back to me Was my baby's fondest playmate And for hours they'd sit and play And I'd hold'em both together on my knee Gone though is his childhood and his life on Earth is done Somewhere in Korea 'cross the sea But I still have fuzzy-wuzzy teddy bear, his favorite chum And it brings sweet happy mem'ries back to me Many hours they played together, then to bed after a prayer And I'd have to kiss old fuzzy-wuzzy too He would laught with glee and hug his fuzzy-wuzzy teddy bear Then I'd dim the lights, their busy day was through "Somewhere in Korea" that's the way the message read Blinding tears were fallin' from my eyes They were sorry but they had to tell me that my boy was dead And so far away from home tonight he lies Oh it seems like only yesterday they played upon the floor He and fuzzy-wuzzy sharing every toy Days I never will forget, if I live a million more When I pictured him to be my pride and joy Proud he died a hero, but no joy prevails tonight Somewhere in Korea is his grave Now old fuzzy wuzzy teddy bear sits all alone tonight And seems to share the bitter truth so brave To listen to this song, click here. |
Analysis
The song’s language is very depressing and catches you off guard based off what the title is.The song is anti-war, because it talks about how the father wishes that his son hadn’t died in Korea, and talks about the happy times they had when he was alive. This song doesn’t say much about politics, but the tone makes it seem more like it didn’t think that the war should be happening. The can be seen as addressing the cost of war, were many lost loved ones, and will never be able to get rid of the memories they have of them. Yes, I believe that war is sad, and a lot of the time is preventable. By: Parker Russell |
The Unknown Soldier
Performed by Elton Britt Recorded c. 1951 Written by John Schram & Charles Grean I am the chill of a winter frost, The night that surrounds a hill I am the shadow, the sunlight lost A voice that will never be still My grave is a promise you did not keep My wreath is a ribbon of pain and though I am dead, I shall never sleep If I know I have died in vain I am the branch of a fallen tree The death of a lonely sky I am the sound of a waveless sea Where the ships of life pass me by I am a hero without a name I died for my fellow man Unknown I'll remain In God's hall of fame 'Til there's peace in the world again 'Til there's peace in the world again To listen to this song, click here. |
Analysis
The Unknown Soldier is a song from the perspective of a man who died in action. He explains that his death was a “promise you did not keep”, this is likely directed at the United States government for not bringing this man home alive. The song hit largely on how war affects the individual because it is about how he gave everything he had to the war and that he was still worried “and though I am dead, I shall never sleep if I know I have died in vain”. The song also focuses on how the soldier recognizes that he died to help his fellow soldiers stay safe and that he will be “Unknown I’ll remain in Gods hall of fame”. By: Regan Campbell |

A Heartsick Soldier on Heartbreak Ridge
Performed by Ken Marvin
Recorded December 1951
Written by Max Fidler, Ernest Tubb, & Nellie Kane
Does the girl I love know I miss her tonight
And how often I mention her name?
Does she knowI long for the sound of her voice
And the love letters that never came?
I’m a heartsick soldier on Heartbreak Ridge
Across from the river of sighs
Where the shells burst around me
And cover the sound of a poor lonely heart when it cries
I’m tired and weary, forgotten and blue
With only one question in mind
How long, ‘O how long, 'til I’m back home again
With the Sweetheart I left behind?
Will my prayers be answered on Heartbreak Ridge?
Will the one that I love still be true?
Does she count the hours until I return?
My poor heart could rest if I knew
I’m a heartsick soldier on Heartbreak Ridge
Across from the river of sighs
Where the shells burst around me
And cover the sound of a poor lonely heart when it cries

The language of this song shows how soldiers miss their wives at home and its sad.It presents the war as something that is tearing families apart. I would think this is anti war. This song is critical and shows the heartbreak and struggles of the men fighting in the korea war. This song answers how war affects the individual because when the soldier returns from war they are often not the same and are haunted by PTSD and other disorders.I agree with this song because it is a strong message without explicit language or being malicious.
